LifeHouse is a signature program of BGC Prince County, providing a safe, structured housing pathway for women and children experiencing unsafe living conditions and housing instability. Developed in response to Prince Edward Island’s intensifying housing crisis, LifeHouse is the only three-stage housing continuum of its kind in the region.
A Safe Haven for Women & Families
LifeHouse operates the only emergency shelter for women and families in Summerside, offering a safe, home-like environment for those escaping domestic violence, homelessness, and crisis situations. Since its launch in June 2022, the shelter has been at full capacity, highlighting the urgent demand for additional emergency housing.
Susan and Margie are the founding members of LifeHouse—an idea that came to fruition following a powerful encounter with an unhoused woman in Summerside. Meeting such a vulnerable individual left a lasting impression and became the catalyst for action, fueling their commitment to address the urgent need for a women’s shelter and transitional housing in the community. From that moment, LifeHouse was born.
Susan and Margie established LifeHouse as the name for the future shelter, inspired by the symbolism of a lighthouse. A lighthouse represents safety and human presence in times of uncertainty, offering guidance, protection, and hope. It stands as a beacon of illumination, watchfulness, and steadfast endurance—values that reflect the mission of LifeHouse and its commitment to supporting women in their time of need.
